Interno Campo Santo Monumentale (L. Corevi, Comune di Pisa)The frescoes of the Campo Santo, made between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, tell many stories taken from the old testament, stories from the life of the patron saint of Pisa San Ranieri... but there is a fresco in particular that hides a curious fact: on the south side east there is Triumph of Death, painted by Buonamico di Buffalmacco between 1336 and 1341. To inspire the artists, with his spiritual contribution, was Domenico Cavalca, author of the 'Lives of the Holy Fathers'. Thanks to him, the evangelical texts of eschatological preaching were transferred to the walls of the Campo Santo. In the lower left part of the Triumph of Death there are seven girls and three boys: they are talking in a garden of delights, playing instruments, singing... just like in the Decameron by Boccaccio, which tells of seven girls and three boys who retire to a country house to escape the plague and as a pastime decide to tell each other a story a day, for ten days.
