Start date:
End date:

On Sunday 1 October 2023, the appointment with #domenicaalmuseo is renewed, the initiative of the Ministry of Culture that allows free entry every first Sunday of the month, in state museums and archaeological parks.

The Museo Nazionale di San Matteo will be open free of charge from 9 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. (last admission 1 p.m.).

At 10.30 a.m., Professor Marco Collareta, former professor of Medieval Art History at the University of Pisa, will hold a talk on Andrea Pisano's Announcing Angel and the theme of the Annunciation as a statuary group.

Andrea Pisano was among the greatest masters of the 14th century. By applying Giottesque principles of monumental painting in sculpture, he gave a decisive impulse to the new conception of the statue, moving from the Gothic figure towards the balanced and autonomous Renaissance one. His Angel destined for the convent of San Matteo, enriched with fine colouring, is an outstanding example of this. Together with the figure of the Annunciata, now lost, it was to form a group, following a recurring theme in Pisa, where the year began on 25 March, precisely on the day of the Annunciation.
