Friday 27 September sees the return of Bright Night 2024.The European Researchers' Night in Tuscany with a programme full of events.
Like every year, the University Museum System will also participate with guided tours, workshops and conferences.
The morning of 27 September is dedicated to schools of all levels, while in the evening the initiatives are aimed at the curious, enthusiasts and experts of all ages.
These are free proposals with compulsory booking when offered in the museum venues and free while places last if held in the Research Squares.
Here are the proposals of our museums:
BOTANICAL GARDEN AND MUSEUM (Via Ghini 13/Via Roma 56)
- from 5 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. "Roots of the future: diversity and conservation of plant species". Garden and Botanical Museum staff will involve people with interactive activities (themed games and quizzes), images and short presentations on the concept of biodiversity (what it means, why it is important and what the main threats are). Some interesting species from a conservation point of view will also be shown in real life at the station.
The proposal is open to everyone and does not require a reservation.

COLLEZIONI EGITTOLOGICHE "Edda Bresciani" (Via S.Frediano 12)
- from4 p.m. to 5 p.m. "On a journey through the Museum: discovering the Egyptological Collections". Guided tour of the ‘Edda Bresciani’ Egyptological Collections to get to know one of the richest collections of Egyptian antiquities in Tuscany through the direct viewing of some of its most significant finds.
The activity is for a maximum of 23 visitors. Participation must be booked while places are available by Monday 23 September 2024, 1.00 p.m. by writing to info.collezioni-egittologiche@sma.unipi.it .

MUSEUM OF PATHOLOGICAL ANATOMY (Via Derna 1)
- 5 p.m. "Invisible pathogens in bioarchaeology: the plague".The lecture will focus on what studies in bioarchaeology, in particular ancient DNA, have shed light on the origins and evolution through the centuries of one of the most aggressive pathogens in human history, the plague. We will talk about the 3 historical pandemics, that of Justinian, that of the mid 14th century, up to the 19th century pandemic, but we will go much further back in time, to the discovery of traces of the pathogen during the Bronze Age and at the end of the Neolithic period. At the end of the lecture there will be a visit to the palaeopathology collection.

MUSEUM OF PHYSICS INSTRUMENTS - SCIENTIFIC LUDOTECA (Piazza Santa Caterina)
- from 2.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m. "Exploring energy: from matter to sustainability". What is energy? From the states of matter to thermal machines, we will discover the laws governing the transformation and transport of energy with interactive experiments. The sustainable management of natural resources involves challenges to increase the efficiency of these two processes. Improved techniques and methods for generating energy would lead to a reduced impact on the climate, mitigating the climate change of recent decades.
The proposal is open to all and does not require a reservation.
