On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Giuseppe Mazzini's death, the Domus Mazziniana in Pisa has promoted a series of initiatives including this philatelic exhibition, which can be visited until 20 April 2022.
The anniversary may be an opportunity to recognise the anticipatory value of his fundamental analyses and of his ideas and expectations that are too soon forgotten: father of national unity, he is certainly a prophet of the republic and of Europe.
Fabrizio Fabrini's collection "Mazzini prophet of the Risorgimento" presents in an original and innovative way, through the world of philately, the ups and downs of a character, who was able to permeate transversally different men and epochs, united by the sole aspiration of representing national interests.
The author has intelligently put together scattered fragments, arranging them like pieces of a mosaic in a comprehensive discourse that is at once history, narrative and, in some ways, critical analysis.
After retracing Mazzini's life, the collection describes his political thought, his idea of fatherland and religion. The comparisons with Dante, Marx, Garibaldi, Cavour and Carducci are also interesting.
Although the collection presents rare and valuable pieces, it does not strictly follow the traditional philatelic canons (watermarks, image centring, tabs, etc.), but tries to privilege "the beautiful" in the stamps and in the material, so as to arouse the interest of visitors, including non-philatelists.
The setting of the exhibition is worthy: the Domus Mazziniana in Pisa, where Giuseppe spent the last period of his life.
Mazzini belongs to Italian history in its entirety and, only in this logic, this research attempts to interpret him, place him and remember him on the wave of the anniversary, without forgetting his ups and downs.
