On Saturday 6 May 2023, the Museum of Natural History in Calci is organising a series of thematic guided tours of the Biodiversity Room with an in-depth look at the figure of Alfred Russel Wallace.
Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) was an important British zoologist and explorer whose 200th birth anniversary is being celebrated this year.
Besides being considered one of the fathers of biogeography, he is also known for having presented, together with the more famous Charles Darwin, the theory of evolution by natural selection.
The visits are part of a calendar of events called #WallaceInitiative, devised by a network of Italian museums to commemorate Wallace during 2023.
As part of this initiative, the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa has ideally dedicated the Biodiversity Room to Wallace throughout 2023. An explanatory panel has been set up inside the room with a brief biography of Wallace and an in-depth look at his studies on biogeography.
The visits, held by Simone Farina, curator of the Biodiversity Room, will last about 40 minutes and will take place in three shifts starting at 3, 4 and 5 pm.
The cost is €10 for adults and €4 for children, including admission and guided tour. Exceptionally, for the day of 6 May, with the same ticket it will be possible to visit all the permanent exhibitions, the Aquarium and the temporary exhibition "Kriptòs.Deception and mimicry in the animal world". For employees of the University of Pisa there is a reduced ticket price of 5 euros, for students of the University of Pisa visits are free of charge.
