Eighty years after the liberation of the city during the Second World War, on 2 September 1944, the exhibition "From War to Liberation" at Palazzo Blu recalls the dramatic period lived by Pisa in the broader context of the conflict.
The images of the exhibition, curated by Prof. Gianluca Fulvetti, from the Department of Civilization and Forms of Knowledge at the University of Pisa, were found in institutions and digital archives, local (such as that of the Fondazione Pisa), national and international. Particularly splendid are the photos produced by the US military and kept by the National Archives of College Park, in Maryland, also recovered thanks to professor Stefano Villani, long-time lecturer at the University of Pisa and now working at the University of Maryland: the bombing of August 31, 1943, which brings war inside Pisa, the allied soldiers who approach the city and fight to free it, its slow rebirth and the extraordinary work of the "Monuments Men" to recover the Monumental Cemetery, burned in July 1944.
The course, divided into four sections (the Axis war, the war in the city, Resistance and repression, Liberation), is preceded by a general introduction to the history of the Second World War.
There is a huge mass of documents and endless libraries on the events that are the subject of this exhibition and their interpretation. "From war to liberation" cannot and does not want to be a complete and exhaustive treatment, but only wants to encourage, especially young people, to know events that still influence our lives and to reflect on them. The exhibition will be open until May 2025, and will therefore also be a useful opportunity for students of our schools.
The topics and images of "From war to liberation" were collected in an agile publication rich in images, edited by Fulvetti and enriched by essays by Stefano Gallo, Gabriella Gribaudi, Daniele Menozzi, Paolo Pezzino and Matteo Pretelli.
In the auditorium of Palazzo Blu, the exhibition will be accompanied between September and November by a series of in-depth meetings curated by Prof Daniele Menozzi. In the first meeting, on Sunday, September 29th at 11.00 am, Professor Paolo Pezzino will speak on the theme "From fascist war to civil war".
The exhibition will be open from 21 September 2024 to 11 May 2025.
