On Monday, September 2nd, the celebrations of the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Pisa will take place, organized by the Municipality of Pisa with the participation of the Regional Council of Tuscany and the Province of Pisa.
From 20:00 to 23:00, thanks to the availability of the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, extraordinary opening at night, with free entrance, of the Camposanto monumentale, the symbol of war and reconstruction in Pisa. Severely damaged on 27 July 1944 during an air raid (a bomb caused the fire and the melting of the lead roof, causing serious damage to the frescoes, many sculptures and sarcophagi), thanks to a painstaking restoration work begun in 1945 - and still ongoing - from the Opera della Primaziale Pisana (the frescoes were all detached and immediately started the timely recovery), the Cemetery has returned to its splendor, although unfortunately many works have been irretrievably destroyed. With the removal of the frescoes were discovered the sinopies, very well preserved, which testify to the creative path taken by the authors and give an idea of how the decoration of the Campo Santo should have looked in previous centuries.
At 21:30 will be held a guided tour by Professor Gabriella Garzella that will tell, among other things, the complex work of restoration accomplished in time by the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, custodian for centuries of treasures of Piazza del Duomo.
To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the liberation, the Municipal Administration has printed a postcard - which will be distributed during the various planned initiatives - with the justification of the award of the Bronze Medal for Military Valour to the Municipality of Pisa.
