Established in 2008, it is the result of a collaboration agreement, signed in Beijing in December 2004, between the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa and the University of Chongqing, which also included the opening of the Galileo Galilei Italian Institute in Chongqing. The Institute is part of the Confucius Institutes network promoted by the Chinese Ministry of Education in over 100 countries around the world, with the aim of spreading the Chinese language and culture. Its main activities, pursued on the basis of the principles of intercultural learning, scientific rigour and international cooperation, are: Chinese language courses; scientific activities, such as research groups, conferences, seminars, exchanges between teachers, researchers and students; organisation of cultural events, concerts, literary clubs, theatrical performances, exhibitions, events related to Chinese folklore and tradition, screenings of films and documentaries; publication of the results of the scientific activity carried out within the Institute.
