Le The nights of archaeology (July 1 - August 4, 2024) is back, the 24th edition of the exhibition promoted by the Tuscany Region that offers the opportunity for visits, events and insights into the museums and archaeological areas of Tuscany.

This year the theme proposed for the special initiatives will be Archaeology, what a passion! With appointments also designed for budding enthusiasts: children and boys who in the great adventures and suggestions of the past - extinct animals,  cavemen, myths, discoveries - still find a fundamental nourishment for curiosity and imagination.

The rich program that unfolds with events throughout the region is aimed at an audience of enthusiasts and curious of all ages, the timetables of the initiatives are diversified to encourage usability.

Here are the proposals of the museums belonging to the University Museum System:
 

Museum of Human Anatomy “Filippo Civinini” - (Medical School, Via Roma 55)

Monday, July 1, 2024 - "Guided tour of the pre-Columbian and Egyptian archaeological collections"

There are three tours (1 hour and 30 minutes):

  • 9:30 am
  • 11:30 am
  • 2:30 pm

Guided tour of the anatomical and archaeological collections of the museum, with the pre-Columbian collection, including mummies, funeral kits and vases, and Egyptian, including two Egyptian mummies, one of them with sarcophagus.

MUSEUM OF PATHOLOGICAL ANATOMY - (via Derna, 1 - Pisa)

  • Wednesday 3 July 2024, 5:00 pm

"Invisible pathogens in bioarchaeology: the plague".

Lecture by Prof.ssa Valentina Giuffra, director of the Museum of Pathological Anatomy, followed by a visit to the collection of paleopathology (duration 1 hour). The conference will focus on what studies in bio-archaeology, in particular ancient DNA, have clarified about the origins and evolution through the centuries of one of the most aggressive pathogens in the history of humanity, the plague. We will talk about the 3 historical pandemics, that of Justinian, that of the mid '300, until the nineteenth-century pandemic, but we will go much further back in time, until the traces of the pathogen were found during the Bronze Age and at the end of the Neolithic. At the end of the conference there will be a visit to the collection of paleopathology

"Oral health, dental paleopathology and nutrition in pre-Roman Italy"

Lecture by Giulia Riccomi, followed by a visit to the paleopathology collection (1 hour). Preserving good oral health is not only limited to having healthy teeth, but has a significant impact on the overall well-being of the individual. Dental paleopathology studies the distribution of dentoalveolar pathologies in order to better understand hygiene habits, subsistence strategies and lifestyle of past communities. Here, the first results of a macroscopic and biochemical study that aims to reconstruct the state of oral health and food practices in some osteo-archaeological series of pre-Roman Italy (VII-IV a.C) will be presented.

Free guided tours for children and adults interested in archaeology, to learn about one of the most significant collections of Egyptology in Tuscany

There are two tours (45 minutes):

  • 5:00 pm
  • 6:00 pm

Free event. Reservation required until the availability of seats (maximum 23 participants). Bookings will be accepted from July 4:

GIPSOTECA DI ARTE ANTICA E ANTIQUARIUM - (Piazza San Paolo all’Orto, 20)

Special opening at night in Gipsoteca

The suggestive night visit of the Gipsoteca di Arte Antica will allow visitors to admire one of the first Italian plaster casts, founded in 1887, in the warm light of the evening lighting. The collection offers a synthesis of the most famous and significant works of Greek, Etruscan and Roman art, as well as finds from the Antiquarium collection of classical archaeology and the Palethnological collections.
