Pisa is...Nature
Pisa is not only art and culture.
The city of Pisa, in addition to offering its visitor an invaluable historical and artistic heritage, to be admired in the squares, in the alleys of the centre and on the historic Lungarni (streets along the Arno river), provides the possibility of long and beautiful walks on foot and by bicycle, in the shade of the gardens that have made the history of the city and along tree-lined roads that wind in the outskirts and inside natural reserves.
A few kilometres from the city centre of Pisa it is possible to immerse yourself within the majestic greenery of the San Rossore Estate: the largest pine forest in Europe and the centre of the Park of Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli, which, with its farms and estates, stretches onto the Tuscan coast between the provinces of Pisa and Lucca. The park is a protected natural area that extends over the coastal strip from Versilia to Livorno, encompassing the entire Pisan coast, and consists of beaches, Mediterranean scrub, maritime pines, and holm oak and poplar woods. The environment is home to numerous rare plant and animal species and many of its areas are covered with marshes of unique vegetation. The San Rossore Estate can be explored on foot, by bicycle and on horseback. Guided tours allow the visitor to see the beauty of nature on board an eco-friendly horse-drawn buggy or train.
Through the tree-lined Viale D’Annunzio, named after the famous poet, it is possible to reach the sea. The Pisan coast and its sea, praised in many works by D’Annunzio, offer the visitor an exciting journey through small sandy or pebbly beaches, protected by mighty breakwater cliffs, large beaches, organized with bathing and tourist facilities, extensive beaches surrounded by fine sand dunes, and large pine forests found behind sunny and silent towns. All these can be explored on foot or on horseback. During the beautiful spring and summer days, from the coast one can see the profiles of the island of Corsica and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago: Elba, Gorgona and Capraia...
