The port of Marina di Pisa

The tourist port was born a few years ago, it is therefore equipped with the most up-to-date solutions and is entirely walkable, designed so that you can also walk near the outlying works admiring the sea, the mouth of the Arno and the Apuan Alps. It has a total of 354 berths. In the centre of the port there are a bar and a restaurant overlooking the harbour, where events are often organized.

What did the ancient port look like? One of the earliest descriptions is that of a Roman official, Rutilio Namaziano, who wrote in 415 AD: ‘un porto conosciuto da ogni popolo per le ricchezze e potenzialità: l’emporio di Pisa si protende verso il mare aperto ammirabile per l’aspetto e la potenza. Tuttavia la spiaggia è selvaggia, aperta ai venti (…). Distava allora la città 5 km dalla costa, ma il mare la lambiva quasi, grazie alla foce dell’Arno e a un’ampia insenatura lagunare. Vi si giungeva dal mare anche via terra, da Triturrita, un borgo posto all’imboccatura del suo porto su una bassa penisola di scogli, nascosta, a chi veniva dal mare, dalle onde stesse che vi si frangevano contro (…)' 'a port known by every people for its riches and potential: the emporium of Pisa stretches out towards the open sea, admirable for its appearance and power.
