The Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli Natural Park was established with the Regional Law of the Toscana Region no. 61 of 13 December 1979. Already in Roman times, this area was characterised by the presence of scrubs and forests called Selva Palatina. Behind a coastal ridge, separated from the sea by smallreliefs, there wer a sinus pisanus, a lagoon, a coastal lake and two rivers: the Serchio, which was called Auser and whose mouth was to the north and the Arno, which was divided into three branches, one of which flowed into the sea, while the others swamped in the sinus pisanus, which in the Middle Ages was identified with the Pisan port of the Maritime Republic. The territory began to take its present form around the fifteenth century, when the Medici carried out the first reclamation. The park extends along the coastal strip of the provinces of Pisa and Lucca, including the municipalities of Pisa, Viareggio, San Giuliano Terme, Vecchiano and Massarosa in an area that includes beaches, dunes, wetlands and agricultural and wooded areas, with a great variety of Mediterranean flora and fauna.
