Exhibition of the Association Free Engravers curated by Marco Fiori and Marzio Dall'Acqua
The thematic exhibition that constitutes the central event of the social year, full of events, of ALI, the Bologna Association Free Engravers "Luciano De Vita", opens on Saturday 14 December in the halls of the Graphic Museum.
The prestigious exhibition venue of Palazzo Lanfranchi and the city of Pisa proved to be very stimulating for the fifty artists called to record a work on the theme Al Campo Santo dei Miracoli Pisani: il Trionfo della morte, and other stories: the powerful republican Pisa on the seas, the excellent monuments that testify to it, university studies and science, the Order of Knights of Santo Stefano and noble traditions, meetings between cultures, the arts, the religions that already reflect in the Cathedral Square and have continued through the centuries to weave the history of the city.
The history of the Pisan civilization has thus offered countless possible openings to the search and creative proposition of the engravers. To which the curators of the project, Marco Fiori and Marzio Dall'Acqua, suggested to put as a cause of the work the Triumph of Death a grandiose memento mori that, together with the Final Judgment and Inferno of correlation Dante and the Tebaide, he performed in the middle of the fourteenth century Buffalmacco, one of the most prominent representatives of the Gothic in Tuscany.
After the restoration for the damage suffered by the fire of July 1944 in Camposanto, in the Triumph of Death recently returned to the original wall, the ALI’s engravers and woodcut artists were able to find interesting reasons for reflection and personal graphic processing. The work presents in fact multiple iconographic cues, as well as existential and teleological content valid at all times, but above all attributable to the dramatic contingencies experienced by everyone on the world stage.
The ninety tables lined up on the walls of the Graphic Museum are subjective, critical and imaginative responses to the complexity of the subject matter given by fifty masters engravers of our time, for whom the demands of the historical palimpsest, of which art is a substantial part, have proved to be opportunities for creative reflection on the feeling of the present time.
The exhibition "At the Holy Field of Pisani Miracles: the Triumph of Death, and other stories" will be open every day until 26 January 2025 with hours 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
