On Wednesday 18 May, as every year, all countries around the world will celebrate International Museum Day, the day promoted by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) with the aim of recalling the role museums play in society and strengthening their ties with local communities, visitors and national and local cultural policy makers.
The National Museum of Palazzo Reale at 11 a.m. will offer a free guided tour inspired by this year's theme chosen by ICOM: The Power of Museums, also intended as an opportunity to explore the potential of museums to bring about positive change in their communities.
The guided tour will in fact focus on the museum's links with the city, through its collections. Thus, not only the manners and ancient weaponry of the Gioco del Ponte, but also the centrality of the figures of the grand dukes in the cultural and architectural development of Pisa, demonstrating that the Palazzo Reale is a museum that recounts a historical period of the city of Pisa, for too long underestimated because it was seen only as the period of Florentine domination.
