Wooden Tower for the little ones

Torre di Legno (Le Mura)
Torre di Legno (Le Mura)
Here we are, at the entrance to the Walls of Pisa, you can go up from here and get to Piazza dei Miracoli! The tower looks like an ancient wooden tower, but it was built on the occasion of the restoration of the walls as a point of ascent and descent. These walls were built in the twelfth century by the Pisans, as a defence against their neighbours from Lucca and the imminent arrival of Federico Barbarossa, who was elected emperor in 1152. The intent of the emperor was to reclaim the Italian peninsula, which was increasingly detaching itself from the feudal system. Pisa had declared itself a free municipality, provoking the wrath of the Barbarossa.

The walls had a perimeter of 7 kilometres, but today it is only possible to walk over them for about 3 km. The other part was demolished for traffic reasons in the 19th century and, in part, destroyed by the bombings of the Second World War.
