On the occasion of the donation to the graphic collections of the University of Pisa of three large drawings by Lorenzo Viani, on Friday 5 July at 6 p.m. the Museo della Grafica of Palazzo Lanfranchi (Municipality of Pisa, University of Pisa) will open the exhibition Lorenzo Viani in the expressionist line of contemporary art

The exhibition flanks the three large donated drawings with another twenty works by the artist from Viareggio, thirteen of which are already in the collection and seven lent by the same generous donor, Paolo Lombardi, together with another six paintings in ideal dialogue with the bitter expressive force of his compositions: from Giovanni Fattori's Drowned - of whom he was a pupil at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence - to an incisive portrait by Grosz, to De Pisis, author in this case of a surprisingly torn image of a religious man, to the mockery of power in a clownish Character by Enrico Baj.

The donation comes in memory of Paolo Lombardi's wife, Donata Devoti, lecturer at the University of Pisa until 2007 and curator of the University's graphic collections from 1970 to 1984.

Donata Devoti accompanied the exhibition season of the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe both at the Institute of Art History and in its subsequent location at Palazzo Agostini in Via Santa Cecilia, a splendid season evoked in the exhibition with posters, catalogues and documents relating to the various exhibitions.
