Elliott Erwitt. Icons
From Thursday 26 December to Sunday 4 May 2025, the Republican Arsenals will host the exhibition ‘Elliott Erwitt. Icons'.
Exactly one year after the artist's death, the Arsenali Repubblicani in Pisa are preparing to host an extraordinary retrospective dedicated to one of the greatest masters of contemporary photography.
The exhibition is curated by Biba Giacchetti, organised by Daniel Buso and Elena Zannoni's ARTIKA, in collaboration with Orion57 and the Municipality of Pisa.
The exhibition celebrates the photographic genius of Elliott Erwitt through 80 iconic shots that capture the history, costume and irony of the 20th century. The images on display offer a unique insight into his long career, revealing the surreal, romantic and often playful gaze that made his style unmistakable. The exhibition features some of the most famous moments immortalised by Erwitt, such as the encounter between Nixon and Khrushchev, the moving image of Jackie Kennedy at her husband's funeral and the famous boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
Alongside these historical photographs, the public can admire the famous portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara and Marlene Dietrich. There is no lack of intimate and familiar images, such as the one of Erwitt's eldest daughter portrayed in bed with her mother, and photos steeped in irony, such as those dedicated to his beloved dogs or taken during his wedding in Bratsk.
Erwitt's playful and self-deprecating vein emerges in the section dedicated to his self-portraits, which tell not only about the photographer, but also about the man capable of observing and laughing at himself and the world.
